President's Message

Time seems to go so quickly - may be that's because I am getting older - but I can clearly remember the time twenty-five years ago, when it was possible to trade solely in the West Midlands without having to go outside the region at all.

Twenty years ago, and especially with the closures of the major steelworks we realised that it was necessary to go national and then fifteen years ago we had to really seriously engage with Europe.  But since the advent and use of the world wide web, we have now entered the global market and we recognise that the whole world has an effect on what we are doing in our businesses here in the West Midlands.  Whether we employ one or twenty thousand people   or work for a factory or institute, the same applies everywhere.  Our need to engage with the global market is more important today than ever.  We should not sit on our hands and be reactive, but proactive and look forward to what we should be doing in three to five years time.

You only have to read the success stories below, in the review of the recent International Trade Awards, to see how many of our MWTF members have risen to the challenges that the global marketplace is presenting.

UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) supports UK business into international markets with offices around the world based in our UK Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates.  If you need help and support then UKTI, through its delivery via the International Trade Teams in the West Midlands' Chambers of Commerce, is the best way to go.  At MWTF we seek to complement the activities of the International Trade Teams by providing a platform, where the regions businesses involved in, or aspiring to, international trade can come together, learn together and help each other expand their businesses.  We are always pleased to accept any queries you may have, on export issues and point you in the right direction to get expert advice.

Success is a great thing and we have recently notched up our 600th member of the MWTF so there is lots of expertise to draw on.
