Good news. It’s a new
year and with newness comes opportunity. So I
welcome you to the start of the year with a sense
of optimism.
This is not a blind optimism, but one based
on things learnt over the past months and what it
is going to take to be successful in 2009. It is
important to remember that there is never one
reality for as the saying goes more millionaires
are created in a downturn than at any other
time.
Much of this has to do with mind set,
positioning, the ability to innovate, to spot an
opportunity, and as with all these things, a slice
of good luck and a penchant for timing.
One
thing is for sure we shouldn’t wish to go back to
how it was as this has been proven to be
flawed.
Who would have thought we would have seen
the headline ‘Chinese growth engine ‘derailed’ by
global downturn’ (Daily Telegraph 5/1/09). One thing
is also clear, we have never been more globally
connected than we are now and whilst this has
caused wild swings over the past six months, it is
also offers us a fantastic opportunity,
particularly for those companies keen to
export. An
example of this was at the recent Saudi Business
Delegation event held at the ICC in November. Whilst
there were a number of logistical issues which had
to be over come, the day openly illustrated a
positive response to international business
despite an unpredictable economic climate.
So
what we need now is a counterbalance to the news
we are being fed. We need
two things.
Firstly for you to promote your good news
stories, let us know the successes you are
having.
Secondly in supporting business, we need
the banks to be as innovative and open as they
expect their business clients to be in order to
ensure the growth of UK economy.
And
if none of that works or you feel like a change I
hear the recession has fuelled passion for online
dating sites with a 15 pc rise in new users
visiting online dating sites in November (Daily
Telegraph 5/1/09). It would
appear that passion is on the rise even if the
markets aren’t!
